This is intended to be a homage to very many musicians I've loved since I started listening to music. My intention is to tell what I know about them, hoping that those people who like them too, will help me fill numerous gaps, which I may have in their careers and discographies. Sorry, but there are no MP3 audio files here at all, just info (and love for the musicians).

One of the fastest rock guitarists, also a very good singer, Alvin Lee was born Graham Alvin Barnes on December 19th, 1944, in Nottingham, England.

VINCE MARSHAL & THE SQUARECAPS

Vince Marshal & The Squarecaps was the first band I know with Alvin Lee, probably circa 1957 (Alvin was 13 at that time!), but I haven´t any other details:

In 1960, Alvin Lee joins Atomites after answering an ad:

THE JAYBIRDS

The Jaybirds was formed by Alvin Lee and Leo Lyons around 1961:

They were still based in Nottingham, but moved to London in 1961. Originally a quintet, after a year in London, they came back to Nottingham when several members of the band left.

Back in Nottingham, The Jaybirds was then reduced to a trio:

THE JAYBIRDS #2
1962
Alvin Lee

Leo Lyons

+ drummer unknown to me. Help!

In June 1962, they moved to Hamburg, where German fans were avid of listening to British bands.

They got another member and became a quartet.

In mid 1962, They Jaybirds were living and playing in Hamburg:

THE JAYBIRDS #3
1962
Alvin Lee

Leo Lyons

+ two others unknown to me. Help!

But when the two (unknown) members left, Lee and Lyons came back to Nottingham to look for new musicians.

This was the new lineup for The Jaybirds (probably around 1963):

THE JAYBIRDS #4
1963-Aug 65
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Leo Lyons
bass
Dave Quickmire
drums

The band tried luck again moving to London for 9 months. The Jaybirds released two singles: ´Mockin´ bird hill / Hubble bubble´ (in April 1964), and ´Juliet / Here I go again´ (released in May 1964). This was followed by another comeback to their hometown, Nottingham,.

After many months together, Dave Quickmire left music, so he was replaced by Ric Lee in August 1965.

This was the new lineup for The Jaybirds, in August 1965:

THE JAYBIRDS #5
Aug 65-Nov 66
êMansfields
Alvin Lee

Leo Lyons

In 1966, they finally moved to London, where they were hired for a stage play called Saturday Night and Sunday Morning during six weeks. They also started playing as backing band for recording demos for new artists.

Then, The Jaybirds starting backing The Ivy League until Feb 1967.

Final, decisive move was when they asked organist Chick Churchill to join the band in November 1966.

This was the last lineup for The Jaybirds, in November 1966:

Ten Years After

Ten Years After in 1968 - from left to right: Leo Lyons, Ric Lee, Alvin Lee, Chick Churchill

A superb band! Ten Years After were formed in May 1967, from the ashes of Jaybirds:

Their first gig was played under the band name Blue Yard, they finally adopted the name Ten Years after.

They stayed together for almost 8 years, releasing several magnificent albums. One of their milestones was their appearance at Woodstock Festival in August 1969, where they performed ´I´m going home´ at full speed. Check their performance, please (you´ll find some videos below...).

In June 1974, Alvin Lee felt that the band had finished their life, and started his solo career.

ALVIN LEE BAND

Alvin Lee & Mylon LeFevre in 1973

Alvin Lee and gospel singer Mylon Lefevre released a beautiful joint album in 1973, On the road to freedom. When they were asked to play some live songs for TV, on the Midnight Special show, in November 1973, Alvin assembled an all-star lineup with several musicians who also played in the album:

Alvin Lee Band in 1974 - the backing vocalists are not present

A few months after the (first) separation of Ten Years After, Alvin Lee started his solo career assembling an all star band for a one-off gig, for recording a live album on March 22, 1974, at The Rainbow in London:

ALVIN LEE BAND #2

They recorded the double live album In flight. After that, Alvin Lee formed a stable lineup in September 1974, with different players.

By the way, the concert was also filmed, but not broadcasted, so someone should release it any day soon!

This was the incredible band assembled by Alvin Lee (billed as Alvin Lee & Co) for touring supporting the live album In flight:

Ten Years After

In July 1975, Ten Years After reformed for a long, final American tour during July and August:

TEN YEARS AFTER #2

êAlvin Lee Band
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Leo Lyons
bass

And then, they parted aways again, this time for many years.

ALVIN LEE BAND (again)

Alvin Lee Band in 1976 - from left to right: Tim Hinkley, Andy Pyle, Bryson Graham and Alvin Lee

This new edition of Alvin Lee & Co formed in March 1976, with Tim Hinkley back in the band:

ALVIN LEE BAND #4
Mar 76-Jul 76
êTen Years After
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Andy Pyle
bass
Tim Hinkley
keyboards
Bryson Graham

They released an album, Pump iron!, with lots of guests: Boz Burrell (bass, from Bad Company), Steven Thompson (bass, from Stone the Crows), Mel Collins (sax), Ronnie Leahy (keyboards, from Stone the Crows), Ian Wallace (drums, from King Crimson), and two former Andy Pyle colleagues from Blodwyn Pig: Jack Lancaster and Ron Berg.

But in July 1976, Alvin stopped playing live for a long period and the band parted ways.

This lineup also recorded another album, Saguitar, but it remained unreleased. Some years later, it was finally released under the title Let it rock.

TEN YEARS AFTER (almost)

In 1977, there´s an attempt to reform Ten Years After, although this time Ric Lee wasn´t involved:

TEN YEARS AFTER #?

êAlvin Lee Band

They even recorded a complete album from April to May 1977, but finally, the 3 original members decided not to use the Ten Years After name (Potts suggested Ten Years Later). But, after a while, they split without even playing gigs, when they were supposed to play as opening act for Peter Frampton.

Ten Years Later - from left to right: Alvin Lee, Tom Compton & Mick Hawksworth

After a long period of inactivity, Alvin Lee forms a new band (this time named Ten Years Later in a clear attempt to remember his past band) in February 1978:

ALVIN LEE BAND #5
Feb 78-May 80
êTen Years After
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Mick Hawksworth
bass
Tom Compton
drums

A powerful team, with Mick Hawksworth fierce playing (it reminds me of the late John Entwistle) and Tom Compton´s full drive support.

Ten Years Later released two albums: Rocket fuel in June 1978, followed by Ride on in September 1979. They played their last concert in November 1979, finally folding in May 1980.

In June 1980, Alvin Lee forms a new edition of Alvin Lee Band (first time he used this band name!):

ALVIN LEE BAND #6
Jun 80-Oct 81
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Steve Gould
guitar, vocals
Mickey Feat
bass, vocals
Tom Compton

They released two albums, Freefall (October 1980) and RX-5 in November 1981, just when the band changed again.

In October 1981, an unexpected even happens: legendary Mick Taylor joins Alvin Lee!:

ALVIN LEE BAND #7
Oct 81-Nov 81
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Mick Taylor
guitar, vocals
Calvin ´Fuzzy´ Samuels
bass
Tom Compton
drums

They started recording an album that was never finished. And in November 1981, Mick Taylor leaves (or maybe in February 1982?).

In November 1981, Alvin Lee Band becomes a trio again:

ALVIN LEE BAND #8
Nov 81-May 83
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Calvin ´Fuzzy´ Samuels
bass
Tom Compton
drums
Ten Years Afterê

This was the edition of Alvin Lee Band that played in my city. Then, I didn´t know Mick Taylor had left the band to join John Mayall again. A pity. Anyway, it was a superb concert (but I would have loved to see Mick too). I was on first row, and Alvin really rocked! He played lots of TYA classics, plus several classic covers, such as ´Hey Joe´ or ´Blue suede shoes´. Surprisingly to me, he didn´t play material from his solo albums.

In May 1983, they stopped playing together for a while, as Alvin Lee resurrected Ten Years After for some months.

TEN YEARS AFTER (again)

In July 1983, Ten Years After reformed for three concerts (Reading Festival and The Marquee´s 25th Anniversary):

TEN YEARS AFTER #3
Jul 83-Sep 83
êAlvin Lee Band
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Leo Lyons
bass
Chick Churchill

Ric Lee

Alvin Lee Bandê

A live video was released, Live at The Marquee, and it was followed in 1990 by the release of the live album The Friday Rock Show sessions - Live at Reading.

ALVIN LEE BAND (again)

In September 1983, Alvin Lee Band returns to playing gigs together:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
Sep 83-Sep 85
êTen Years After
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Calvin ´Fuzzy´ Samuels
bass
Tom Compton
drums

They stayed together until September 1985.

I´m not really sure this was the lineup, as I once read that Tom Compton joined Johnny Winter in 1983. Can someone help me, please?

In May 1986, Alvin Lee changes all the members, with Steve Gould back in the band:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
May 86-Jun 88
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Steve Gould
bass
Alan Young

Ten Years Afterê

In June 1988, they parted ways as Alvin Lee came back (again) to Ten Years After.

In July 1988, Ten Years After reformed for playing several festivals during the summer, until September:

ALVIN LEE BAND (again)

Alvin Lee Band in 1994 - from left to right: Steve Grant, Alvin Lee, Alan Young & Steve Gould

In April 1992, Alvin Lee reforms his Alvin Lee Band:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
Apr 92-Aug 94
êTen Years After
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Steve Gould
bass
Steve Grant
keyboards

They played together until August 1994, when Alvin started working with the band Nine Below Zero.

During October and November 1994, Alvin Lee toured backed by the band Nine Below Zero:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
Oct 94-Nov 94
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Alan Glen
harmonica, guitar
Gerry McAvoy

Brendan O´Neill

In January 1995, Alvin Lee comes back to work with his previous incarnation of Alvin Lee Band:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
Jan 95-Apr 96
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Steve Gould
bass
Steve Grant
keyboards
Alan Young
drums

They played together until April 1996, when Alvin moved to another project, The Best Of British Blues.

Around May 1996, Alvin Lee assembles a band of great veteran musicians, for a tour under the monicker The Best Of British Blues:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
May 96
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Eric Burdon
vocals
Micky Moody
guitar
Boz Burrell
bass
Tim Hinkley
keyboards
Aynsley Dunbar
drums

But, after only 4 concerts, Boz Burrell leaves them, being replaced by Tony Franklin. This still was May 1996.

New bassist in May 1996 for The Best Of British Blues is virtuoso Tony Franklin:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?

They finish the tour at the end of that same month, and Alvin Lee resumes both his Alvin Lee Band and his old group Ten Years After.

From June 96 to May 1997, Alvin Lee toured with his past band (but now as a trio):

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
Jun 96-May 97
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Steve Gould
bass

TEN YEARS AFTER (again)

Ten Years After reunite for several tours from May 1997:

TEN YEARS AFTER #7
May 97-Sep 00
êAlvin Lee Band
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Leo Lyons
bass
Chick Churchill
keyboards
Ric Lee

I think it was September 2000 when they last played together. Alvin Lee wouldn´t be involved in the next incarnation of the band.

Other info on members of Ten Years After (I know up to 6 members)
To be covered (5): Chick Churchill, Joe Gooch, Ric Lee, Leo Lyons, Dave Potts

ALVIN LEE BAND (again)

Around 1997, Alvin Schrempf (also known as Alvin Shane) is the new drummer in Alvin Lee Band, until 2001:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
1997
êTen Years After
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals

This was the Alvin Lee Band during April to May 2004:

ALVIN LEE BAND #?
Apr 04-May 04
Alvin Lee
guitar, vocals
Pete Pritchard
bass
Richard Newman

By then, Alvin Lee slowed his usually hectic tour schedule, only playing selected gigs, although he kept on releasing albums.

Other info on members of Alvin Lee Band (I know up to 37 members)
Old pages (5): Aynsley Dunbar, Tony Franklin, Bryson Graham, Tim Hinkley, Andy Pyle
To be covered (31): Dyan Birch, Eric Burdon, Boz Burrell, Jim Capaldi, Frank Collins, Mel Collins, Tom Compton, Mickey Feat, Alan Glen, Steve Gould, Steve Grant, Mick Hawksworth, Neil Hubbard, Ronnie Leahy, Mylon LeFevre, Gerry McAvoy, Paddy McHugh, Micky Moody, Richard Newman, Brendan O´Neill, Mike Patto, George Perry, Pete Pritchard, Calvin ´Fuzzy´ Samuels, Alvin Schrempf,... up to 31 musicians.

AND THEN...

Alvin Lee

Alvin Lee unexpectedly passed away on March 6th, 2013 here in Spain (where he lived), after some complications from surgery. He will be missed, as he has given rock fans many great moments to enjoy.

OWN COMPILATIONS (5 credits)
  • Pure blues - Alvin Lee & Ten Years After (1995)

    • Members: Dyan Birch, Chick Churchill, Frank Collins, Mel Collins, Steve Gould, Steve Grant, Tim Hinkley, Neil Hubbard, Ric Lee, Leo Lyons, Paddy McHugh, Alan Young (RIP: Alvin Lee, Alan Spenner, Ian Wallace)
    • Guests: (RIP: Clarence Clemons, George Harrison, Jon Lord)
    • Comments: Pure blues is another compilation, also credited to Alvin Lee & Ten Years After, compiling tracks from the entire Alvin Lee career. That's why it features lots of great musicians: his mates in Ten Years After (Leo Lyons, Chick Churchill and Ric Lee), plus Neil Hubbard (guitar), Alan Spenner (bass), Steve Gould (bass, guitar, keyboards), Tim Hinkley (keyboards), Jon Lord (keyboards), Steve Grant (keyboards), Mel Collins (sax), Clarence Clemmons (sax), Ian Wallace (drums), Alan Young (drums), plus backing vocals by Paddy McHugh, Frank Collins and Dyan Birch. The tracks are taken from Ten Years After albums: Ten Years After (1 track), Ssssh (2 tracks), Recorded live (2 tracks) and About time (1 track), and from the Alvin Lee albums: In flight (1 track), Detroit diesel (1 track), 1994 (1 track), Zoom (3 tracks), plus one unreleased track, ´Outside my window´, a demo recorded with Steve Gould.
    • My opinion: Very good selection of tracks, with the outstanding ´The bluest blues´.
  • Solid rock - Alvin Lee & Ten Years After (October 1997)

    • Members: Dyan Birch, Chick Churchill, Frank Collins, Mel Collins, Mickey Feat, Steve Gould, Steve Grant, Tim Hinkley, Neil Hubbard, Ric Lee, Leo Lyons, Paddy McHugh, Richard Newman, Alan Young (RIP: Alvin Lee, Alan Spenner, Ian Wallace)
    • Guests: (RIP: Vicki Brown, Clarence Clemons)
    • Comments: Solid rock is a superb compilation, credited to "Alvin Lee & Ten Years After". But the best thing is that it includes 3 unreleased tracks. Apart from two previously released songs, Tim Hinkley appears in two of the unreleased tracks. One of these new tracks is from 1993, ´Play like it used to be´, co-written by Alvin and Tim, and featuring them as a duo. A 2nd unreleased track was probably taken from the Alvin Lee & Co. concert at 1974. The new track is ´I love you when you rock and roll´.

  • Maldita sea mi suerte - Los Suaves (1991)

    • Members: Alberto Cereijo
    • Guests: Juan Cerro, Eduardo Pinilla, Jeronimo Ramiro, Carlos Raya (RIP: Ollie Halsall, Alvin Lee)
    • Comments: Los Suaves are one of the most loved rock bands in Spain. This double album, Maldita sea mi suerte was recorded in March and April 1991. There is a track, ´La noche se muere´ where the band invited up to 12 guitarists, where they play endless guitar solos (the song is as long as 19:38). An absolute delight for guitar lovers. Most of the guitarists are among the best ones in Spain (Carlos Raya, Eduardo Pinilla, Jeronimo Ramiro, Paco Ventura, Juan Cerro - not to forget Los Suaves´ own lead guitarist, the supreme Alberto Cereijo), plus two international stars: Alvin Lee and Ollie Halsall. All the guitarists played together in the studio, no overdubs one by one.
    • My opinion: Fantastic album, and my favourite song can´t be other than ´La noche se muere´. I just can´t have enough of it.

QUESTIONS:

01. Did Alvin play in any album by the band Clouds?

02. Was The Gits a real band, or just a name for a gathering of friends? They were Alvin Lee with Tim Hinkley, Boz Burrell and Ian Wallace.

03. Did The Jaybirds release two more singles?
